Utako Farmers Market: A New Era of Sustainable Commerce in Abuja

Abuja has taken a significant step toward sustainable urban development with the recent commissioning of the Utako Farmers Market, Nigeria's first solar-powered market. This innovative project, spanning 3,000 square meters, was officially inaugurated by the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, under the visionary leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike.

Designed to enhance agricultural trade efficiency, the market features:

50 lock-up shops

40 informal stalls

7 warehouses

The integration of solar energy ensures a stable power supply, enabling traders to operate longer hours and preserve perishable goods more effectively. It’s projected to reduce post-harvest losses by up to 20% and boost traders’ earnings by as much as 30%.

By cutting out middlemen, the market empowers farmers with better prices and strengthens direct access to fresh produce for residents across the city.
